Could it really have been 10 years ago? I can still feel the warm hands of summer on my shoulders, as we sat on that bus marked 'University'.... laughing.
You, in a bright pink T-shirt, long blonde hair dripping like yellow sunlight. Me, in my trusty black tracksuit pants... I never did have much of a fashion sense. ;)
I dont remember exactly what we talked about that day... I think you said something about 'years of ballet dancing', and boyzIImen and concerns that your chemistry demonstrator was stalking you....
I just remember the smile in your words, and that soft unmistakeable light, I would come to know as 'Susan'.
I can see old steps in a green and brown library. Walking down and seeing you in the Hijab for the first time. I never did comment. It wasnt that i didnt realise how brave and beautiful what you were doing was... To follow your heart in the midst of a terrified world...It was because I knew that at that time, what you needed from me was not questions, or half-baked wisdom, but just someone to laugh with....
And we did. Every day.
I remember tears. Hearing of how you were vilified against. How 'friends' deserted. How small minded people can be.
I would ask "Suze, dont these people make you want to scream.... Want to rage?" and you would tell me softly, "Whats the use in cursing the darkness, when you're holding a candle".
Through the passing of the years so many things have changed... and yet from the sidelines we've been there, cheering for one another... Holding each other in the light.
I remember when I got the letter of entrance into medicine all those years ago.... Hearing you screaming.... screaming... on the answering machine when I got home....;)
Remember writing to you from Swaziland... telling you a thousand more stories when I returned...seeing your tears... Your willingness to help.
Your joy, when I told you I'd found my soulmate.
And as for you....
You're married now... To a wonderful, intelligent, compassionate human being.... With two gossamer winged angels for children...
It seems to me Suze, that you're on fire. As you work to break down these imaginary walls we build between human beings. As you work for womens rights, for the equality of all people, for the upliftment of humanity...
Just the thought of you, brings light streaming into the room.
Mother, wife, Lecturer, comedienne, freedom fighter.
You're an example to us all of what a human being can be.
And now as you enter this new, exciting stage of your life.... as you step out onto the national and world stage....
My heart swells with joy.... Knowing that your words, your experience, your sense of joy and laughter and exuberant life... is just what this tired world needs to hear... to try once again to turn 'the jangling dischords of injustice into a symphony of peace.'
My friend, thank you for being such a beautiful part of my life. For teaching me with your example. For lighting up the way.
You're not just holding a candle.
You are the light.
All my love,
Maithri
The first series of 'Salam cafe' airs on Wednesday 7th May 10pm on SBS, Australia wide, featuring Susan Carland and her husband Waleed Aly. And every week thereafter.
Watch. Laugh. Learn.

39 whispers of hope:
Friends,
Things have been very busy so i've not had a chance to respond to all the beautiful comments on my last post. Know that they are all appreciated and I will respond when I have a little more time.
Much love and gratitude, M
maithri,
what a lovely tribute. i will be fascinated to see what Salam Cafe is all about.....i avoid adding new tv shows to my list, it's long enough already but for this i can make an exception. now, how to make it stick in my brain for the next fortnight?
love,
k
I watched the whole thing. Fantastic! Specially Loved the segment called 'the truth', hilarious.
Why dont we have shows like this in the US? She seems like an incredible person.
peace, Randy
That is a wonderful tribute! She sounds like someone I would like to know.
Randy's right. They have no such shows here in the US. Bah! :)
peace,
~Chani
Hi !
Thanks for visiting my blog.
What a wonderful friend you have !
The description of her as light streaming into the room....is so beautiful.
Have an amazing day:)
Autre
Maithri,
What a wonderful love letter to a friend. You both hold the candle and light to the world - and what a soft glowing light that is.
Thanks.
lovely friendship. it gives me hope somehow. in a world drenched in fear and suspicion, it feels like reaching the surface of the ocean for a desperately-needed breath of air.
I have found that we have different ways of remembering the past and our stories of this can take the form of tragedy, romance, comedy, etc. I prefer structure my memories and stories as comedy because I rather like laughter.
Salam Café looks very interesting.
A wonderful memory and tribute to a most remarkable woman. Ah such a friendship is a real blessing of love and laughter :) And the show was really funny too :)
My love to you and your family, brother Maithri :)
Ya Haqq!
What a wonderful and loving post, sorry i can't watch , not only am i not in Australia, but I don't have a TV. But my joy is boundless for your friend...
Bright blessings!
Warm greetings of peace dear Maithri,
What a beautiful and loving tribute to your friend!
Funny how small the world is, I recall reading about her & her husband in this article last August.
Stay bright & beautiful,
Baraka
Awwwww, shucks, Maith. *blush*
I can say without any false modesty thatI do not deserve the kind words Maithri has devoted to me. As you would all know, the generostiy of Maithri's spirit means he could make Lucifer himself come across as a pretty swell guy!
And for all you folks not lucky enough to know Maithri in real life, let me assure you, he is even cooler, even sweeter, even funnier, even smarter, even more awe-inspiring in the flesh than on his blog. He is the person I want to be when I grow up!
And....errrr...everyone, please tune in. We need the ratings :P
I promise the show on SBS is (marginally) better than the Wayne's-world-esque-community-TV effort we had for Channel 31.
Also, OS people - it will be online after the show!
Love,
suze xxx
PS. Lovely though your words were, Maithri, I cannot BELIEVE you told the WORLD that I used to like boyzIImen. *hides* Is nothing sacred?!?!?!

You didn't list two things about yourself that you love. That was the rule. And it's important because too often people don't appreciate themselves. I expect something.
Oh, Maithri,
here again is proof
that love grows....
And you share it well.
Clink! To you both, to the circle!
Beautiful....
Dear Kylie,

Dear Randy,
I love that bit too. How funny is it!! I've been tellin Susan for the longest time she needs to go into Standup Comedy... They're all hysterical and such wonderful, compassionate human beings also.
There should be more shows like Salam Cafe. The world so deperately needs to open its mind.
Much love, M
Dear ThailandChani,
Yeah she's one of the coolest people on the planet.
Im glad that it's gonna be on the internet after being televised in Oz so that people overseas can watch also.

Blessings of Light and peace to you, M
Dear Alexys,
Your light glows so brilliantly my friend. You warm my heart with your beautiful words,
Deep thanks and soft love to you, M
Dear Terri,
Thank you my friend for these tender words. Its important that Christian and Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist and Sufi and every other belief system... extend the hand of real friendship to one another...
Theres a saying which Muhammad Ali once quoted it says something like "Seas, Lakes, streams, ponds and rivers all have different names, but they all contain water. Religions have different names also, but they all contain truth"
The same gift of love, in different wrapping ;)
My love to you and the family dear friend, M
Dear Reverend Nick,
I love your way of remembering...
Its always the laughter that I keep close to my heart... theres something so precious and priceless about the gifts that laughter between friends can bring...

M

Dear Sister Baraka,
My deep thanks for sharing this great article with me.
Prejudiced thinking is so prevalent in our society because people are afraid. The more we can show people that there is no us and them... only us... the more love and peace there will be,
Love and thanks to you, M
((((Suze))))

Dear Suzanne,
You're such a wonderful human being. I think its wonderful what you're doing on your blog... giving your love away so freely to your readers and asking them to find it in themselves.
Keep shining my friend,
Peace and love, M
Dear Singleton,
The proof that love grows...
Its everywhere today my friend,
In the wings of the butterfly
In the outline of a rainbow
traced through the rain
In ordinary men and women
of every race
religion and nationality
lifting their voices
in one song
to celebrate
the birth
of a new humanity,
My deep love to you always, M
